Abstract :
Abstract This is a survey research designed for collecting data about the situation and direction of research in physics in Thailand. Based on two sets of questionnaires and information obtained from various sources such as Technical Information Access Center (TIAC), university and governmental office web sites, Journal Link Project at Chulalongkorn University and Science Citation Index database during 1980-1999, we found that there were 1,116 physicists working in universities, governmental offices and research institutes in Thailand. This gave us the ratio between Thai physicists and Thai population equal to 1.8:100,000. The majority of physicists in Thailand were Masters Degree holders, 52.7%, followed by 32.6% bachelor degree holders, and only 14.7% Ph.D. holders. We estimated that in this year there were 950-1,100 undergraduate students, 120-180 master students and 15-30 Ph.D. students studying for a degree in physics. It was interesting to point out that there were only three libraries in the country that contain more than 10 titles in international physics journals. Our results also show that there were only 9 strong research groups existing in Thailand, and the total number of physics publications, when compared with other countries in this region, was below that of Vietnam but slightly above that of Indonesia.
