Abstract :
Abstract CFX-5, a commercial computational fluid dynamics program was used to study ventilation in building by a natural convective flow through two-story building with solar-attic with a solar chimney attached to it. The program was first tested and validated with a theoretical problem to familiarize the user with various issues of the program, including the stability. Two dimensional, laminar, natural convective flow was assumed and unstructured mesh was used throughout this study. The model building was 10 m. wide and 6 m. high with triangular roof having three values of slopes, namely, 15, 30, 45 , whereas the chimney height had three values: 3 m, 5 m and 7 m (measuring from the top of the 45 roof). The solar intensity was assumed at 800W/m . The results show that the increases of roof slope and chimney height both give better ventilation. The increased ventilation due to roof slope is very interesting and should be further investigated. The results obtained can be applied to buildings that have similar configurations with this study which could help save energy in improving living comfort as well as for improving productivity in farming of plants, mushrooms and live stocks.
