The rock specimens are classified as strong to very strong rocks. They are collected from the pit walls of Chatree gold mine, Pichit province. Finite difference analysis using FLAC is performed to verify the use of equivalent diameter (De) of the irregular shaped specimens in the calculation of rock strengths and elasticity. The strengths and elasticity obtained from the MPL testing are compared with those from the conventional (ASTM) test methods. Comparison of the test results indicates that the MPL method predicts the rock compressive strengths better than does the conventional point load test method. A close agreement is obtained between the Brazilian tensile strengths and the tensile strengths predicted by the MPL method. The MPL method however can not satisfactorily predict the elastic moduli of the rocks, primarily due the uneven contacts between the loading platens and the rock surfaces. The stress analyses from numerical modeling show that if the irregular shaped specimens have consistent thickness and width, the effect of the irregular edges on the specimen compressive and tensile strengths is insignificant. This implies that the MPL testing on irregular lump specimens can be used to estimate the intact strengths of the rocks.
